Security forces in Libya have intercepted a human trafficking operation, leading to the arrest of a Libyan driver who was attempting to smuggle nine Nigerian women.
Arrest at Security Checkpoint
The arrest was carried out on January 2, 2026, during a routine stop-and-search operation. The incident took place at the security gates located in the Al Jufra district of Libya.
According to reports from Migrant Rescue Watch, an organization that monitors migrant activities in the North African nation, the driver was caught with the nine undocumented female migrants from Nigeria in his vehicle.
Suspects Transferred for Legal Action
Following the arrest, both the Libyan driver and the nine Nigerian women were taken into custody. They have been formally transferred to the Al Jufra Security Directorate.
Authorities confirmed that all individuals involved are now facing legal proceedings for their roles in the attempted smuggling operation.
Ongoing Issue of Migrant Smuggling
This case highlights the persistent challenge of human trafficking and irregular migration routes through Libya, which often target vulnerable individuals from West Africa, including Nigeria.
The arrest underscores the continued vigilance of Libyan security forces at key checkpoints, aiming to disrupt such illegal networks that exploit people seeking better opportunities abroad.
