NAPTIP Rescues 13-Year-Old Nigerian Girl Trafficked to Burkina Faso for S3xual Exploitation

The Ogun State Command of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons has achieved a significant victory in the fight against human trafficking with the successful repatriation of a 13-year-old Nigerian girl from Burkina Faso. This distressing case highlights the ongoing challenges of trafficking in the region and the critical work of NAPTIP in protecting vulnerable individuals.

Details of the Trafficking Operation

The victim, who was working as a tailoring apprentice, was trafficked to the French-speaking country last year by her 26-year-old divorced employer, Omotola Adedibu. According to NAPTIP officials, the teenager was subjected to severe s3xual exploitation in Burkina Faso, forced to engage in s3xual activities with multiple men daily. This horrific ordeal was part of a scheme to repay a debt of 1.3 million CFA francs to a woman identified as Madam Sweet, a situation that persisted for over six months, even during the victim's menstrual periods.

NAPTIP's Intervention and Arrest

Abosede Jimoh, the Ogun State Commander of NAPTIP, disclosed this breakthrough during a sensitisation programme on human trafficking held at Gateway Secondary School in Ita Iyalode, Abeokuta. Jimoh emphasized that the principal suspect, Omotola Adedibu, has been arrested and will soon face charges in court for her involvement in this crime. While other accomplices remain at large, this arrest marks a crucial step in holding perpetrators accountable.

Ogun State's Trafficking Challenges

Jimoh noted that Ogun State continues to be an endemic area for human trafficking, underscoring the urgent need for collaboration among all stakeholders to combat this crime effectively. The sensitisation programme was specifically designed to educate schoolchildren, who are particularly vulnerable to deception, about the dangers of human trafficking. It aims to equip them with the knowledge to identify, resist, and report trafficking-related activities, thereby preventing future incidents.

Broader Implications and Call to Action

This case serves as a stark reminder of the pervasive nature of human trafficking in Nigeria and the importance of agencies like NAPTIP in safeguarding citizens. The successful repatriation of the 13-year-old girl not only brings relief to her family but also reinforces the agency's commitment to justice. As NAPTIP continues its efforts, public awareness and community support are essential in eradicating this heinous crime across the state and the nation.
