In a significant breakthrough, the Anambra State Police Command has dismantled a major child trafficking network operating within the state. The operation led to the dramatic rescue of thirty-three underage girls and the arrest of a key suspect.
Raid in Awkuzu Uncovers Trafficking Den
Acting on credible intelligence, police operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad in Awkuzu stormed a residential building in the Oyi Local Government Area. The raid, which took place on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, resulted in the immediate rescue of 33 underage girls who were being held at the location.
During the operation, law enforcement officers apprehended a 37-year-old female suspect identified as Ifeoma Success Anthony. She is now in police custody assisting with the investigation into the syndicate's activities.
Investigation Triggered by Abduction Case
The successful police action was the culmination of an intensive investigation launched after a distressing report was received by the command. According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, relatives of three missing girls alerted authorities after sighting their children.
The three victims—Divine Mbam (14), Nwagu Favour (15), and Oke Blessing (18)—were reportedly abducted from Ebonyi State on September 26, 2025. They were later seen at a building on Emma Pigin Road in Aguleri, which police investigations revealed was allegedly used for child trafficking and prostitution.
Preliminary findings indicate the property is owned by one Mrs. Ngozi Nnanyelugo, aged 45, who is currently evading capture. Police have declared her a principal suspect and a manhunt is underway.
Ongoing Efforts and Public Appeal
The Anambra State Police Command has affirmed its commitment to eradicating crimes against vulnerable persons, especially children. Investigations are continuing to unravel the full scope of the syndicate's operations and identify all individuals involved.
SP Ikenga urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue providing useful information to security agencies. Such collaboration is deemed crucial for preventing similar crimes and protecting the young and vulnerable in society.
The command has promised to communicate further developments on the case as the investigation progresses.
