Google Translate Error Leads to Exposure of Alleged Kremlin Hit Squad
A significant security breach has reportedly unveiled a covert Russian intelligence unit known as Center 795, following the arrest of a senior operative linked to alleged assassination plots. The investigation took an unexpected turn when communications were intercepted due to a technical blunder involving Google Translate, exposing sensitive operational details.
Operative Arrested in Colombia Reveals Secret Unit
Denis Alimov, identified as a decorated former member of the elite Alfa special forces unit within Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB), was detained by the Federal Bureau of Investigation upon his arrival at El Dorado International Airport in Bogotá, Colombia. Authorities believe Alimov was connected to Center 795, a secretive intelligence structure reportedly established during the early months of the war in Ukraine.
This unit is believed to combine operatives from Russia's military intelligence service, the GRU, and the domestic security agency, the FSB. According to intelligence reports, the Kremlin created Center 795 after another covert unit, GRU Unit 29155, became widely exposed following international incidents, including the poisoning attack in Salisbury, England.
Direct Reporting to Senior Military Leadership
Center 795 is alleged to report directly to Valery Gerasimov, one of the most senior military figures under Russian President Vladimir Putin. The group's reported activities include battlefield coordination in Ukraine as well as covert operations abroad, such as sabotage, abductions, and targeted political killings.
Investigators claim the unit was involved in plans targeting two Chechen dissidents living in Europe. The operative allegedly offered more than £1 million for each target if they could be delivered to Russia, either alive or dead, highlighting the high-stakes nature of these operations.
Technical Blunder Exposes Communications
The investigation took a critical turn when communications linked to the alleged operation were discovered through a technical error. One of the operatives reportedly used Google Translate while communicating with a suspected contract killer, and the translations were routed through servers in the United States.
This allowed authorities to obtain access to the communications after securing a court order. In intercepted exchanges, the suspected hitman wrote, "I believe we will find him soon, he can't be moving around all the time. He'll relax and fall into the trap at some point." Another message referencing Alimov stated, "He's very well connected... one of the closest men to an important government official."
Potential Compromise of Secretive Unit
Alimov had reportedly been under investigation for over a year before his arrest. He is currently being held in Colombia while legal proceedings regarding his possible extradition to the United States continue. Investigators believe this case may have exposed significant details about Center 795, including its structure, operational base, and network of sponsors.
