Anambra Demolishes Suspected Kidnap Kingpin's Home After Doctor Rescue
Anambra Demolishes Suspected Kidnap Kingpin's Home

The Anambra State Government has demolished the residence of a suspected kidnap kingpin believed to be responsible for the abduction of Dr. Edwin Emegakor, the Medical Director of Crown Multi-Specialist Hospital in Nkpor. The operation also resulted in the destruction of a shrine located within the building. The suspect remains in police custody for further interrogation.

Enforcement of Homeland Security Law

The demolition was carried out under the recently enacted Anambra State Homeland Security Law, which grants the government authority to confiscate or destroy properties used for criminal activities. This move underscores the state's commitment to combating crime and ensuring public safety.

Details of the Abduction

Dr. Edwin Emegakor was abducted on Thursday, May 7, 2026, while attending to a patient at his hospital in Idemili North Local Council Area. The kidnappers, reportedly dressed in security uniforms, carried out the operation with precision. Security sources revealed that operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) acted on intelligence and raided the suspect's residence, leading to his arrest. The suspect had been operating publicly as a spare parts dealer.

Ransom Demand and Rescue

Investigations indicated that the kidnappers had demanded a ransom of N500 million. However, the DSS operation disrupted the gang's activities and secured the doctor's release unharmed. Police authorities declined immediate comment, citing ongoing investigations that could be compromised.

NMA's Response

The abduction had prompted the Anambra State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to issue a 48-hour ultimatum, threatening a suspension of medical services across the state if the doctor was not rescued. However, the association withdrew the threat after news emerged on Sunday that Dr. Emegakor had regained his freedom. The state NMA Chairman, Dr. Princeton Okam, confirmed the doctor's release, stating, “Our colleague has been rescued safely and reunited with his family. He is healthy, in high spirits, and responding well after the traumatic experience.” Dr. Okam also urged the state government to strengthen security measures to protect lives and property.

Medical Services Continue Uninterrupted

A visit by The Guardian to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku, and some private clinics showed medical services continuing without interruption. A source at the NMA secretariat said the planned industrial action had become unnecessary following the doctor's rescue.

Family's Gratitude

A relative of Dr. Emegakor expressed gratitude to security operatives for securing his release. “Na my in-law and brother o, we have not rested since Thursday. They were demanding N500 million. To God be the glory, he’s been rescued,” the relative said.
