Bandits have abducted Major General Rabe Abubakar (retired) and his wife in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State. The retired senior officer, who once served as Director of Defence Information, was traveling to Katsina for a wedding ceremony when the armed men attacked on Saturday, May 30, 2026.
Details of the Attack
According to a security source who spoke with Daily Trust, the driver of the vehicle managed to escape despite sustaining a gunshot injury. However, the retired general and his wife were taken into the forest by the assailants. A video circulating on social media shows the victims' vehicle parked inside the Matazu Divisional Police Headquarters. The reporter noted at least two bullet holes on the red Peugeot 504 car.
Military Response
The military has initiated efforts to secure the release of the retired officer and his wife. A top military source stated, 'We have received the sad news of his abduction and that of his wife, and we will act accordingly to ensure he and his wife are rescued.'
Information shared on a military veterans' platform read: 'Maj. Gen. Rabe Abubakar, former Director of Defence Information, was kidnapped together with his wife on his way to Katsina today. He was kidnapped along Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State. His driver escaped with a gunshot injury.
