The Imo State Police Command has initiated a coordinated search and rescue operation following the abduction of a 17-year-old student from the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO). The victim, Mary Ezinwayi Uzoma, a 100-level Microbiology student, was reportedly kidnapped along the FUTO/Ihiagwa Road in Owerri West Local Government Area.
Police Confirm Incident
In a statement issued on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, the state police spokesperson, DSP Henry Okoye, confirmed the incident and assured the public that the command is working diligently to secure the victim's release. He stated that the Commissioner of Police, Audu Garba Bosso, has directed the Anti-Kidnapping Unit to take over the case as part of proactive measures to ensure the safe rescue of the student and the swift arrest of the perpetrators.
Enhanced Security Measures
Okoye further revealed that the command has intensified intelligence-led operations in collaboration with other security agencies. “The CP has reinforced security deployment across the FUTO axis and adjoining communities, with sustained patrols, surveillance, and visibility policing already ongoing,” he said.
The police spokesperson assured students, school authorities, and residents of the command’s unwavering commitment to their safety. “The Imo State Police Command remains proactive and resolute in its mandate to prevent crime, protect lives, and property,” the statement read.

Okoye urged members of the public with useful information to report at the nearest police station or contact the command via the emergency number 0803 477 3600. The police continue to work with local vigilantes to track down the kidnappers and rescue the victim unharmed.
