NANS Urges FG to Boost School Security Amid Kidnappings

The Ogun State chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Committee (JCC), has called on the Federal Government to strengthen security measures in educational institutions across Nigeria. This appeal comes in response to the rising wave of kidnappings and violent attacks targeting schools.

Resolution from Senate Sitting

The demand was part of resolutions adopted during the inaugural Senate sitting of NANS JCC Ogun State Axis for the 2025/2026 parliamentary session, held at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta. In a communiqué signed by Chairman Tijani Adekunle, the student body expressed deep concern over the country's deteriorating security situation.

Recent Abductions Spotlight Crisis

The association highlighted the recent kidnapping of students and teachers in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, as a stark example of the growing threats faced by schools. The Senate condemned these attacks and urged security agencies to ramp up intelligence gathering, surveillance, and rescue operations to protect students and educators.

“The Senate expresses profound concern regarding the deteriorating security situation nationwide, specifically referencing the recent abduction of students and educators in Ogbomoso, Oyo State. We unequivocally condemn the incessant attacks on educational institutions and request that security agencies intensify intelligence gathering and rescue operations,” the communiqué stated.

Solidarity and Call for Release

The students expressed solidarity with victims and their families, demanding the immediate and unconditional release of all kidnapped individuals. They formally appealed to the Federal Government through the Office of the National Security Adviser and the Federal Ministry of Education to urgently enhance security infrastructure in all schools—tertiary, secondary, and primary—emphasizing that student safety is a national priority.

Support for State Policing

NANS JCC also backed the push for state policing, arguing that a decentralized system would improve response times, strengthen community intelligence, and better protect lives and property. The group commended the House of Representatives for passing the state police bill, calling it a bold and historic step.

“The NANS JCC Ogun State Axis Senate believes that the swift passage of this bill will significantly strengthen local intelligence gathering, improve response time to security threats on and around our campuses, and ultimately safeguard the lives of students and Nigerians at large,” the communiqué noted.

The students urged the Senate and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to expedite action on the legislation to enable the operationalization of state policing without delay.

Commendation for Security Agencies

While raising concerns, the Senate commended the Ogun State Command of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force for their proactive efforts in tackling kidnapping and banditry in the state. According to the students, collaboration between these agencies has helped maintain relative peace and security on campuses in Ogun.

Other Resolutions

The meeting also addressed other national and educational issues, including support for President Tinubu's reforms, commendation of Governor Dapo Abiodun's educational interventions, and recognition of Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola's contributions to student welfare and educational development in Ogun State.
