Ngige's convoy attacked by gunmen in Anambra

Former Anambra State Governor and immediate past Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, has narrated his harrowing experience after armed assailants ambushed his convoy in Anambra State.

The Deadly Ambush

The attack occurred on Thursday, November 27, 2025, around Umuoji in Anambra State. According to Ngige, the gunmen were dressed in police and military uniforms when they launched their assault on his convoy.

A woman recording the incident on her mobile phone was shot dead during the attack, while a shop owner sustained severe injuries that required surgical intervention. The convoy's escort leader also suffered gunshot wounds and underwent surgery, with the pilot car left riddled with bullets.

Ngige's Firsthand Account

Speaking when Peter Obi visited him at his hometown in Alor, Idemili South local government area, Ngige revealed disturbing details about the attack. "The gunmen pursued the convoy and shot at the occupants," he stated.

The former minister disclosed that the attackers killed the woman and wounded his police orderly before dispossessing him of his rifle and uniforms. He described the attackers' remark as particularly troubling, noting that they accused the policemen of "serving a zoo government."

Uncertain Motives and Wider Implications

Ngige expressed uncertainty about whether the attack was specifically targeted at him, noting that his convoy is easily recognizable because his driver of 22 years is widely known. However, he suggested the gunmen might have simply been attacking any convoy with police escorts.

The immediate past Minister of Labour and Employment from 2025-2023 used the opportunity to dispel rumors of his death, assuring the public: "As you can see, I'm alive; I'm not dead, so there should be no panic."

This incident adds to the growing security concerns in the region, coming months after former Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami's convoy was attacked in Kebbi State by suspected political thugs.
