A Nigerian man identified as Omonugbe has publicly stated that he would prefer to be killed by kidnappers rather than allow himself to be abducted for ransom. In a Facebook post, Omonugbe expressed his determination to resist any kidnapping attempt, even if it means provoking the captors to shoot him on the spot.
Resistance Over Submission
Omonugbe wrote, "No way a kidnapper would kidnap me and not kill me on the spot. I will never follow them to that bush. I would rather frustrate them to shoot me than follow them to the bush. That's for my view." His statement reflects a growing sentiment among some Nigerians who feel that the trauma and uncertainty of kidnapping are worse than death.
Context of Rising Kidnappings
Kidnapping for ransom has become a widespread issue in Nigeria, with criminals targeting individuals from all walks of life. Victims are often held in remote locations, subjected to physical and psychological abuse, and released only after payment. Omonugbe's stance underscores the desperation and fear that many citizens face.
While some may view his declaration as extreme, it highlights the harsh realities of living in areas where security is fragile. The Nigerian government has been criticized for its inability to curb these incidents, leading individuals to take personal stands against such threats.
