Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has issued a strong condemnation of the recent deadly attacks in Kebbi and Zamfara states, labeling the escalating violence across Nigeria as devastating and utterly unacceptable.
Details of the Coordinated Attacks
The violence unfolded on Tuesday, with gunmen striking two states in a brutal display of force. In Kebbi State, assailants targeted the Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School (GGCSS) in Maga, located within the Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area.
According to a statement from the Kebbi police command spokesperson, Nafi’u Abubakar Kotarkoshi, the attackers abducted 25 students during the assault on the educational institution.
Simultaneously, in neighboring Zamfara State, a separate attack was reported in Fegin Baza village, Tsafe Local Government Area. This incident resulted in a tragic loss of life, with no fewer than three persons killed and 64 others abducted.
Peter Obi's Heartfelt Reaction
Reacting from Monaco, Peter Obi expressed his profound grief in a statement shared on his official X account. "My heart is heavy in faraway Monaco as I receive the heartbreaking news," the Labour Party stalwart stated.
He emphasized that these tragedies highlight a rapidly deteriorating security situation that the nation must refuse to normalize. "Entire communities are living in fear; schools—safe havens for learning—are now vulnerable targets. Families are being torn apart, and innocent lives are being destroyed. This is not the Nigeria we should accept," Obi declared.
A Call for Urgent Government Action
Obi used the platform to issue a direct appeal to all levels of government, demanding immediate and decisive action. He called for authorities to urgently intensify security efforts and undertake a complete overhaul of the nation’s security architecture.
His primary demands include ensuring the safe rescue of the abducted schoolgirls and all other victims. He firmly stated that Nigerian children must never be left at the mercy of terrorists.
Obi extended his deepest sympathies to the governments and people of Kebbi and Zamfara States, as well as the parents and families of the abducted girls. He also offered prayers for the soul of a staff member who lost his life during the attack and for the comfort of all bereaved families.
"I pray for the safe return of the abducted girls and for healing and protection for every affected family. May God guide our security agencies as they work tirelessly to bring them home," he concluded.
