Akure Youths Warn Ondo Killings and Abductions Signal Dangerous Pattern

A group known as the Akure Youths Coalition has raised alarm over the escalating insecurity in Ondo State, particularly in the Akure region, asserting that recent violent incidents are not isolated cases but part of a dangerous and spreading pattern. The coalition emphasized that attacks, including killings and abductions, have been occurring unchecked for months, devastating families and instilling fear in once-secure communities.

Communities Affected by Recent Attacks

According to the youth coalition, communities such as Ilu-Abo, Eleyowo, Imafon, Igushin, and Ilado have been severely impacted by gunmen. In a recent assault, suspected kidnappers targeted the Igushin community, attacking a poultry farm where they killed a mother and her daughter. Shortly after, a youth was killed in Ilado, highlighting the rapid and brutal nature of these incidents.

The coalition, represented by leaders Comrade Ogundipe O'Seyi and Comrade Adekanbi Oluwatuyi, reported that many residents are now abandoning their homes due to the persistent threat. While acknowledging some proactive efforts by the state government, the group stated that the ongoing violence has overshadowed most governmental achievements, calling for more decisive action.

Demands for Land Revocation and Community Collaboration

In a detailed statement, the Akure Youths Coalition demanded the revocation of lands allocated to suspected criminal elements. They also urged traditional rulers to urgently review and, where necessary, revoke land allocations granted to herdsmen to prioritize public safety. The coalition called for a collaborative approach involving the Ondo State Government, political office holders, traditional leaders, corporate organizations, and other stakeholders to address the crisis effectively.

The statement further emphasized the need for unity and vigilance, urging traditional rulers, religious leaders, community associations, and civil society groups to promote responsible information-sharing in support of security efforts. The coalition appealed to the people and youths of Akure to remain calm and resilient, while maintaining heightened vigilance to protect their communities.

Call for Justice and an End to Violence

Expressing solidarity with affected families, the coalition demanded justice for victims and immediate security measures to protect residents. They declared, "We demand justice for the victims. We demand security for our people. We demand an immediate end to these senseless killings. Enough is enough." The group stressed that Akure remains their home and called for collective action to defend its peace, dignity, and future against the rising tide of insecurity.
