Two Abducted UTME Candidates Escape in Benue, Police Arrest Suspect
Two of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination candidates who were kidnapped by gunmen along the Makurdi–Otukpo road in Benue State have successfully escaped from their abductors. The Benue State Police Command officially confirmed this development on Friday, April 17, also announcing the arrest of one suspect linked to the incident.
Details of the Ambush and Abduction
The victims were among passengers abducted on Wednesday night when armed assailants ambushed a Benue Links bus in Otukpo Local Government Area. According to police investigations, the targeted vehicle was identified as a Toyota Hiace bus owned by Benue Links. The ambush occurred on a major roadway, highlighting ongoing security challenges in the region.
Police Response and Ongoing Efforts
Spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, Udeme Edet, stated that tactical teams, including the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, have been deployed to track down the remaining abductors. "The command has deployed several tactical teams and is working with other agencies to ensure the safe return of the victims," she emphasized. This coordinated effort aims to rescue any other individuals still held captive and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Clarification on Passenger Identities
Authorities have since provided clarification regarding the initial reports, noting that not all passengers on board the bus were UTME candidates.
