The Federal Government has taken a significant step toward national reconciliation by re-absorbing 2,141 Civil War veterans into the military pensions scheme. This historic decision ensures that veterans who fought for Nigeria but retired before completing their service years will finally receive their rightful pensions.
Long-Awaited Recognition for War Veterans
Defence Minister Muhammad Badaru Abubakar announced this development in Abuja, describing it as a powerful demonstration of fairness and national reconciliation. The veterans, who fought on the Nigerian side during the Civil War but retired prematurely, had been excluded from pension benefits due to not meeting the required years of service.
The Minister emphasized that this gesture ensures all sacrifices made by veterans are duly recognized, bringing closure to decades of waiting for these national heroes. This move represents the government's commitment to honoring those who served the nation during challenging times.
RUSEB-P: New Security and Economic Initiative
Alongside the pension announcement, the Federal Government revealed an ambitious program called the Reclaiming the Ungoverned Space for Economic Benefits Programme (RUSEB-P). This strategic initiative aims to leverage the expertise of retired, agile military veterans to restore security in previously insurgent-occupied areas.
The program will engage veterans to reinforce local security while initiating economic projects like farming and mining in these reclaimed territories. According to Minister Badaru, RUSEB-P serves multiple purposes: preventing terrorism resurgence, revitalizing local economies, and strengthening national security and cohesion.
A dedicated committee is currently finalizing the implementation framework for this forward-looking approach that combines security with economic development.
Comprehensive Defence Reforms Underway
Beyond the re-absorption of Civil War veterans, the Ministry of Defence is implementing several other key reforms to reposition the support structure for ex-service members. These comprehensive changes aim to better serve those who have dedicated their lives to protecting Nigeria's sovereignty.
The dual announcement highlights the government's multifaceted approach to national security—both honoring past service and creating new opportunities for veterans to contribute to Nigeria's stability and economic growth.
