In a powerful show of solidarity and resolve, Nigeria's Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has issued a direct charge to soldiers on the frontlines in Sokoto State: intensify operations and ensure terrorists are decisively sent to their maker.
Christmas Visit Bolsters Frontline Morale
The army chief made this declaration on Saturday, 27 December 2025, during an operational visit to celebrate Christmas with troops of the 248 Reconnaissance Battalion in Illela, Sokoto State. He praised the soldiers for their gallantry, professionalism, and resilience in confronting criminal elements whose activities have inflicted severe hardship on innocent citizens.
Shaibu commended the operational successes recorded by the formation, which falls under the 8 Division Area of Responsibility. He stated that their sustained efforts have led to a marked improvement in security within the region. "I commend you for your courage, professionalism and the operational successes recorded so far. Your sacrifices have translated into improved security in your Area of Responsibility," the COAS said.
He then delivered the core of his message: "You must maintain the momentum to further annihilate and send the terrorists to their maker, who is to decide what to do with them." He emphasized that the army can no longer tolerate the excesses of these groups against the Nigerian people.
Unwavering Commitment to Troops' Welfare
Beyond the fighting talk, General Shaibu focused on the well-being of the personnel. He assured them of his unwavering commitment to their welfare and revealed concrete steps to improve their living conditions.
The COAS has directed the construction of additional accommodation blocks, medical facilities, and other essential amenities at the Illela Barracks. This initiative is designed to significantly boost troop morale, enhance their overall well-being, and ultimately increase their operational effectiveness in the ongoing fight against insecurity.
Defence Hierarchy Fetes Frontline Heroes
The visit to Illela followed a special Christmas luncheon held the previous day, Friday, 26 December 2025, at the Giginya Cantonment in Sokoto. The event was attended by both the Chief of Army Staff and the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, to honour frontline troops of Operation FansannYamma.
General Oluyede conveyed warm Yuletide greetings, applauding the troops for their courage, discipline, and steadfast commitment. He acknowledged their sacrifice, especially during a period when most Nigerians were celebrating with their families. "While many Nigerians celebrate this season with their loved ones, you remain steadfast at your duty posts. With sweat on your temples and strength in your backs, you are the wall that never breaks and the hope that can never be shattered," the CDS stated.
He praised the operational gains made under Operation FansannYamma, noting that these efforts have been crucial in restoring public confidence and stabilizing the North West geopolitical zone and its adjoining states.
For his part, COAS Shaibu described the Christmas luncheon as a cherished tradition to recognize the sacrifices and professionalism of deployed personnel. He noted that similar events were held concurrently across other operational theatres in the country.
The COAS also used the occasion to reflect on and remember fallen heroes, assuring the troops that the Nigerian Army remains committed to honouring their legacy by supporting their families.
