Nigerian Army Neutralizes Over 80 Insurgents, Kills Three Senior Terrorist Commanders in Mallam Fatori
In a decisive counterterrorism operation, troops of Operation HADIN KAI have successfully repelled a coordinated terrorist assault on Mallam Fatori in Nigeria's Northeast, resulting in the neutralization of more than 80 insurgents. The intense overnight engagement, which occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, saw Nigerian forces foil a large-scale attack aimed at breaching military positions in Sector 3.
Coordinated Assault Thwarted by Prepared Troops
According to military authorities, the attack involved armed fighters advancing on foot in significant numbers, targeting multiple fronts simultaneously. Particular pressure was applied to positions held by Bravo Company along the Duguri general area, with attackers deploying armed drones in an attempt to overwhelm defences. However, troops had anticipated the offensive through close surveillance and prepared a layered response combining defensive and offensive manoeuvres.
Soldiers engaged the insurgents with controlled fire and coordinated movements, disrupting their advance and forcing a retreat. The ground response was reinforced by air power from the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI, with allied air assets from Niger conducting rapid strike passes against fleeing fighters. This joint air action increased pressure on the insurgents and prevented them from regrouping effectively.
Significant Blow to Insurgent Leadership
The military confirmed that three high-profile terrorist commanders were among those killed during the fighting. Identified as Mallam Abdulrahman Gobara, Mallam Ba Yuram, and Abou Ayyuba, their elimination deals a major blow to the operational leadership and coordination of insurgent groups in the axis. Several other known fighters were also neutralized, further degrading terrorist capabilities in the region.
Following the engagement, troops conducted a sweep of the area, recovering a large cache of weapons and equipment. Items seized included:
- Dozens of assault rifles and machine guns
- Rocket-propelled grenade tubes
- Thousands of rounds of ammunition
- Improvised explosive devices
- Communication radios and components linked to armed drones
Minimal Casualties and Ongoing Operations
Despite the scale of the confrontation, the military reported minimal losses on its side, with only four soldiers wounded and receiving prompt medical attention. Officials emphasized that troops remain firmly in control of Mallam Fatori and surrounding areas, contradicting claims by insurgent groups about military control. Further assessment of damage from air interdictions is ongoing.
The military high command commended the soldiers for their conduct and urged them to sustain pressure on hostile elements. Residents have been advised to remain vigilant and rely on verified information as operations continue across the theatre. This operation underscores the ongoing efforts to secure Nigeria's Northeast against persistent terrorist threats.
