Defence HQ Urges Public Vigilance, Army Reaffirms Support for Displaced Persons
Defence HQ Urges Vigilance, Army Backs Displaced Persons

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has issued a crucial advisory to all Nigerians, urging heightened vigilance in public spaces to bolster personal and community security. This call comes as part of ongoing efforts to enhance safety across the nation's bustling urban and rural areas.

Public Alertness in Crowded Areas

In an official statement released on Friday via its X platform and obtained by media outlets, the DHQ specifically highlighted the need for caution in markets, churches, and other high-traffic gatherings. The military authority emphasized that situational awareness is paramount for preventing criminal activities and ensuring collective security.

The statement read: "Remain alert in crowded places, markets, churches, and public gatherings. Promptly report any unusual behaviour or persons to the nearest security agency. Remember to always maintain situational awareness."

Citizens are strongly encouraged to immediately report any suspicious individuals or activities to the closest security agency. The DHQ stressed that public cooperation with security personnel is essential for reducing risks and safeguarding communities nationwide.

Army's Commitment to Displaced Populations

In a related development, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Army's unwavering dedication to supporting civil authorities in addressing the challenges faced by refugees, migrants, and internally displaced persons.

Shaibu gave this assurance during a courtesy visit from Dr. Tijani Ahmed, the Federal Commissioner of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), at the Army Headquarters in Abuja.

Security-Displacement Nexus

The COAS emphasized the critical connection between security stability and displacement issues, noting that sustainable solutions to refugee and internally displaced persons' challenges are intrinsically linked to improved security conditions and effective civil-military cooperation.

He stated that the Nigerian Army remains fully aligned with national efforts aimed at restoring peace and creating enabling environments for humanitarian and development interventions to thrive. Through its ongoing operations across the country, the army continues to prioritize civilian protection and ensure secure environments that facilitate the safe return, resettlement, and reintegration of displaced populations.

Shaibu assured the commission of the army's readiness to sustain support for humanitarian initiatives focused on restoring dignity, improving livelihoods, and enhancing the overall wellbeing of affected communities.

Commissioner's Appreciation and Request

Earlier in the meeting, Federal Commissioner Ahmed expressed sincere appreciation for the Nigerian Army's longstanding support to the commission. He specifically recalled the army's crucial role during previous evacuation and repatriation exercises of Nigerians from Cameroon, which significantly contributed to operational successes.

The commissioner requested continued collaboration and support from the army as the commission prepares for another similar mission. He emphasized that effective military partnership remains essential not only for operational success but also for ensuring that humanitarian interventions translate into improved livelihoods, dignity, and overall wellbeing for displaced persons.

Call for Unity Among Military Alumni

In another significant development, the COAS has urged members of the 38 Regular Course Association of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) to maintain unity and inclusivity as they continue contributing to national development.

Shaibu offered this advice when receiving members of the association's Executive Committee, led by Rear Admiral Samuel Agada (retired). He highlighted ongoing efforts by the Nigerian Army to strengthen operational effectiveness, deepen professionalism, and enhance troops' welfare.

The Army Chief revealed that plans are underway to increase the army's strength and establish additional depots to better address security challenges across the country. He encouraged members of the 38 Regular Course to serve as worthy ambassadors of the Nigerian Army, leveraging their experience and influence to collaborate with ministries and other stakeholders in tackling national challenges.

This comprehensive approach demonstrates the military's multifaceted strategy encompassing public security awareness, humanitarian support for displaced populations, and alumni engagement for national development.
