Human Rights Groups Demand Independent Probe into Borno Military Attack and Losses
The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has issued a strong call for the establishment of an independent judicial commission of inquiry to investigate the recent terrorist attack on a military formation in Benisheikh, located in Kaga Local Council of Borno State. This demand follows concerning revelations by Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, who disclosed during a sympathy visit that security forces had prior intelligence about the impending assault.
Details of the Tragic Incident
The attack, which occurred on April 8, 2026, resulted in the tragic killing of Brigadier General Oseni Braimah and several other soldiers during an assault on the Damboa Military Base. In a formal statement, HURIWA's National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, urgently appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to constitute a seven-member investigative panel. This panel would include judicial officers, civil rights representatives, and security experts to conduct a thorough examination of the events.
The proposed panel should investigate both the immediate and underlying factors that led to the failure of the Defence Headquarters to act on available intelligence and prevent the devastating attack. HURIWA argued that significant lapses in response mechanisms may have directly contributed to the loss of lives, highlighting a pattern of repeated failures to avert attacks despite prior warnings.
Calls for Accountability and Prosecution
HURIWA further emphasized the need for strict accountability within the military hierarchy, stating that officials responsible for handling intelligence should face appropriate disciplinary measures. The organization insisted that those found culpable be prosecuted in accordance with relevant laws, including provisions under Nigeria's counter-terrorism framework. This move aims to ensure justice and prevent future intelligence breakdowns.
Additionally, HURIWA called for a comprehensive review of security strategies to enhance prevention mechanisms and safeguard military personnel and civilians in conflict zones. The group expressed deep concern over the persistent security challenges in the region, urging immediate action to address systemic issues.
Support from Advocacy Group PSNAFSA
Separately, the advocacy group #Prayer And Support For The Nigerian Armed Forces and Other Security Agencies (PSNAFSA) condemned the killing of the senior officer and other troops. In a statement by its Convener, Mary Abayomi-Fatile, the group described the attack as a stark reflection of the grave risks faced by personnel engaged in counter-insurgency operations.
PSNAFSA extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and commended the immense sacrifices of military personnel. While acknowledging that the Nigerian military has recorded successes against insurgent groups, the group noted that the persistence of such attacks underscores the urgent need for renewed and coordinated efforts to address security challenges effectively.
The group called on the Federal Government to identify and dismantle networks supporting terrorism, including financiers and arms supply channels. PSNAFSA also urged greater public cooperation with security agencies, emphasizing the critical role of community intelligence in combating insurgency and enhancing national security.
Strategic Importance of Benisheikh
Benisheikh, located along the strategic Maiduguri–Damaturu highway, serves as the administrative headquarters of Kaga Local Council and remains a key military and logistical point in operations against insurgents in the North-East. The town has experienced multiple attacks since the early years of the insurgency, including a major assault in 2013 that caused significant casualties and destruction.
