According to official statements from the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 81 Division, Musa Yahaya, the soldier was attempting to de-escalate a chaotic situation when the mentally unstable man struck him on the head with a heavy log. The blow caused severe injuries that ultimately proved fatal.
The situation was swiftly brought under control by other soldiers at the scene, who subdued the attacker and recovered the deceased soldier's weapon. The injured soldier was immediately evacuated to Ikorodu General Hospital, where medical personnel pronounced him dead.
