Violent Mob Attacks Amotekun Office in Osun, Injures Officers and Steals Weapons
The Osun State Security Network Agency, widely known as the Amotekun Corps, has officially confirmed a severe and coordinated violent attack on its operational command headquarters located within the Egbedore Local Government Area in the town of Awo. This brazen assault resulted in multiple officers sustaining injuries, significant destruction of critical property and infrastructure, and the alarming theft of official firearms from the security facility.
Details of the Incident and Initial Refuge
According to preliminary investigative reports released by the Corps, the disturbing incident unfolded at approximately 8:00 p.m. on the evening of Monday, March 23, 2026. The chain of events began when a distressed civilian, reportedly returning from a local eatery, sought urgent refuge and protection at the Amotekun office. The individual was allegedly being pursued and had already been assaulted by a group of armed hoodlums.
Yusuf Idowu Abass, the Public Relations Officer for the Osun Amotekun Corps, provided a detailed statement on Tuesday confirming the attack. He explained that the victim had encountered an individual with whom he had a prior disagreement. This disagreement was said to have originated from a football-related altercation that occurred the previous day, highlighting how a minor dispute escalated into a major security breach.
"Eyewitness accounts indicate that the suspect mobilized a gang, which attacked the victim with dangerous weapons, including machetes," the official statement from the Corps read. It detailed that the victim, despite the assault, managed to escape his pursuers and ran to the Amotekun command office. Officers who were on duty at the time promptly intervened, providing the civilian with immediate protection and shelter from further harm within their facility.
Escalation into a Coordinated Assault on Security Forces
The situation deteriorated rapidly when the assailants discovered that their intended victim had taken refuge inside the Amotekun command. In response, they regrouped and returned to the location in significantly larger numbers, with reports suggesting the mob had swelled to hundreds of individuals. This enlarged group then launched a fierce and coordinated attack directly on the Amotekun command headquarters itself.
During this intense assault, the hoodlums engaged in widespread vandalism, destroying office infrastructure and critical operational equipment. They also inflicted injuries on the Amotekun officers who courageously attempted to defend both the premises and the victim under their protection. The attackers successfully breached the security within the facility, where they further assaulted the victim with knives and machetes. In a particularly grave development, the mob managed to seize and make away with several firearms belonging to the Amotekun command.
Aftermath, Arrests, and Official Condemnation
Despite the overwhelming intensity and scale of the attack, the Amotekun personnel were ultimately able to repel the assailants and restore a semblance of order to the area. In the aftermath, security forces apprehended five suspects directly at the scene of the crime. These individuals have since been transferred to the custody of the Divisional Police Headquarters in Awo for further, more comprehensive investigation and to face potential prosecution.
