Osun LG Chairmen Donate 300 Motorcycles to Security Agencies

In a significant move to bolster security across Osun State, local council chairmen elected under the All Progressives Congress (APC) have donated 300 motorcycles to various security agencies. The donation, made yesterday, is aimed at strengthening operations for the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and other key security bodies in the region.

Enhancing Rapid Response and Patrol Efficiency

The initiative, spearheaded by the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Osun State chapter, underscores the success of the autonomy granted to local councils. According to the ALGON chairman, who also serves as the Chairman of Ifedayo Local Council, the motorcycles are intended to enhance rapid response capabilities, improve patrol efficiency, and support ongoing efforts to curb crime and ensure the safety of residents. He urged beneficiaries to deploy and maintain the motorcycles judiciously.

Distribution and Beneficiaries

The distribution ceremony took place at the Osun State Police Headquarters in Osogbo, with representatives from multiple security agencies in attendance. These included the police, the Department of State Services (DSS), the NSCDC, the Osun Vigilante Group, hunters, and local community security teams. However, notably absent was the Osun State Security Network, known as the Amotekun Corps, which was not represented and was excluded from the list of beneficiaries.

As per the event program, the motorcycles were allocated with 10 units designated for each of the 30 local councils in Osun State. This structured distribution aims to ensure widespread coverage and support across the state.

Political and Traditional Context

In a related development, Bola Oyebamiji, the APC governorship candidate in Osun State, sought royal blessings from the Ooni of Ife ahead of the upcoming election. During his visit, Oyebamiji pledged to uphold public trust and deliver good governance if elected, emphasizing that his ambition is rooted in service, accountability, and commitment to the state's development. He praised the Ooni for efforts to promote Yoruba unity and preserve cultural heritage, highlighting Ile-Ife's historical and spiritual significance.

The Ooni of Ife commended Oyebamiji for demonstrating humility and respect for traditional institutions, qualities he described as essential for leadership. He also urged politicians to foster unity and avoid actions that could deepen political divisions.

Reactions and Future Plans

Osun State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, expressed gratitude for the donation, assuring that the motorcycles would be used effectively to enhance security operations. Meanwhile, the APC leadership, through its Director of Media, Kola Olabisi, praised the reinstated council executives and hinted at more gestures to come for the people of Osun State.

Adding to the optimism, former Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Timothy Owoeye, expressed confidence that the motorcycle donation would help curb kidnappings and other security challenges. He also revealed that the council chairmen plan to donate operational vehicles to security agencies in the near future, signaling a continued commitment to bolstering security measures in the state.
