Labour Party Leader Condemns Terrorist Attack on Military Commander

Peter Obi, the Labour Party's presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has strongly condemned the alleged kidnapping and killing of Brigadier-General M. Uba by terrorist forces in Borno State. The former Anambra State governor expressed his outrage through a social media post on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, calling for immediate government action to strengthen national security.

ISWAP Claims Responsibility for Ambush Attack

The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has publicly claimed responsibility for capturing and executing the brigade commander after ambushing his team along the Damboa-Biu axis in Borno State. The terrorist organization released photographic evidence to support their claims of having interrogated and killed the senior military officer.

This development comes despite earlier assurances from the Nigerian Army that General Uba was safe following the ambush. ISWAP directly countered these official statements, asserting they had captured and executed the commander on the spot after interrogation.

Mixed Public Reactions to Security Crisis

Obi's public statement has generated significant reactions from Nigerians across social media platforms, reflecting growing public concern about the nation's security situation.

User Iamerex commented: "The manner in which people are being killed in Nigeria has made Nigerians see it as a normal thing, and we must say no to such a lifestyle. Human life is sacred and we must all speak strongly to condemn this madness."

Olajide Idowu lamented: "When 'mandate' is reduced to judges echoing Tinubu's victory, what becomes of the nation's priorities? A general was killed by terrorists, schoolgirls abducted, yet the chorus is about mandate."

Emeka Okonkwo wrote: "One outstanding Soldier Gone, gone too many. Now I even remember Lieutenant General Ibrahim Attahiru," referencing the former Chief of Army Staff who died in a plane crash.

Samuel Essang expressed grief: "Rest in peace, General Uba. This one hurts deeply. Thank you for your sacrifice. Nigeria keeps losing its best."

Growing Calls for Security Reform

In his reaction, Peter Obi emphasized the urgent need for the federal government to strengthen the country's security architecture. The incident has raised serious questions about the effectiveness of current security measures, particularly when high-ranking military officers face such fatal attacks.

The killing of Brigadier-General Uba represents another significant blow to Nigeria's counter-terrorism efforts in the northeast region, where various terrorist groups have maintained persistent operations despite military campaigns.

This incident occurs against the backdrop of other recent security challenges, including the kidnapping of 25 schoolgirls in Kebbi State, which has drawn condemnation from other political figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
