The Nigerian Army has provided crucial details following a devastating suicide bomb explosion at a mosque in Maiduguri, Borno State. The attack, which occurred during evening prayers, has left the community in shock and prompted an immediate security response across the city.
Explosion Rocks Gamboru Market Mosque
According to an official statement from Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), the incident took place at approximately 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 24, 2025. The explosion targeted a mosque situated within the bustling Gamboru Market in the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council area, precisely as Muslim worshippers gathered for their evening prayers.
Preliminary investigations by the military point to the work of a suspected Boko Haram terrorist. The assailant detonated an improvised explosive device, causing widespread panic and casualties. The bomber was confirmed to have died instantly at the scene of the attack.
Casualty Figures and Emergency Response
The Army disclosed that the blast resulted in significant civilian harm. A total of 32 individuals sustained injuries of varying severity. Tragically, two of the injured civilians later succumbed to their wounds while receiving treatment in the hospital. The military further noted that two other victims remain in critical condition, while the rest are stable and receiving appropriate medical care.
A swift multi-agency response was activated in the aftermath. Troops from Operation HADIN KAI, in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, other security agencies, the Borno State Government, and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), cordoned off the area. Victims were promptly evacuated to the General Hospital and the Teaching Hospital in Maiduguri for urgent medical attention.
Heightened Security and Call for Vigilance
In response to this security breach, the Nigerian Army has intensified surveillance and patrols within Maiduguri and its surrounding environs. The objective is to deter any further attacks and ensure public safety, particularly during the festive yuletide season when large gatherings are common.
The military has urged residents to remain calm but extremely vigilant. A public advisory called on citizens to be security-conscious in crowded places and places of worship. People are encouraged to report any suspicious persons or activities immediately to the nearest security post. The statement emphasized that extra caution should be exercised during religious gatherings and other public events.
