The operation was initiated following a credible report of an attack on a local resident, demonstrating the military's proactive response to community threats.
Swift Action Based on Credible Intelligence
Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu Zubairu, the Acting Media Information Officer for the Headquarters of the Joint Task Force (JTF) Operation WHIRL STROKE, confirmed the arrest in an official statement. The operation was launched on March 13, 2026, after security agencies received actionable intelligence regarding an assault on Mr. Shaapera Seeta Michael in Agasha Village.
"Acting swiftly on the report, troops of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Intervention Battalion XI deployed under Operation WHIRL STROKE mobilised immediately to the affected area to track down the suspect responsible for the assault," the statement detailed. This rapid deployment underscores the operational readiness and commitment of Nigerian security forces to address criminal activities in the region.
Targeted Search and Apprehension
Upon arrival at the scene, the troops implemented a strategic cordon of the area to prevent any potential escape by the suspect. They then conducted a targeted search operation aimed at identifying and apprehending the alleged attacker. This meticulous approach ensured the operation was conducted with precision and minimal disruption to the local community.
The suspected militia member was identified as Mr. Suurnen David Akum, a 27-year-old resident of Agasha Village in Guma Local Government Area. He was successfully apprehended by the troops without incident. During the arrest, a locally fabricated rifle was recovered from the suspect, highlighting the ongoing challenges of illicit arms proliferation in the area.
Investigation and Commendation
The suspect is currently under investigation and will be handed over to the appropriate authorities for further legal action, as stated in the release. This process aligns with standard procedures to ensure justice is served while maintaining transparency in security operations.
Major General Moses Gara, the Force Commander of the Joint Task Force Operation WHIRL STROKE, commended the troops for their professionalism and tactical approach, which directly contributed to the successful apprehension. "He encouraged them to maintain the operational momentum and remain vigilant in the ongoing efforts to deny criminal elements the freedom to operate within the area," the statement added, emphasizing the continuous nature of security efforts in Benue State.
This arrest marks a critical step in enhancing safety and security in the region, reflecting the effectiveness of intelligence-driven military operations in combating criminal activities. The recovery of the locally fabricated rifle also points to broader issues of arms control that require sustained attention from security agencies.
