In a significant counter-terrorism victory, troops of the Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) have successfully foiled a planned mass abduction by Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists. The operation, which unfolded on 30 March 2026, prevented the kidnapping of over 150 civilians, including men, women, and children, in a dramatic rescue effort.
Timely Intervention Prevents Catastrophe
The incident occurred at approximately 1450 hours when troops under Sector 2, deployed at Dutse Kura, came under attack while escorting civilians along the Buratai–Kamuya axis. As the troops decisively engaged the terrorists, surveillance assets identified the insurgents attempting to abduct a large number of civilians using about 17 vehicles, with the intention of transporting them into the bush.
Pursuit and Rescue Operation
According to a statement by Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, the Media Information Officer for Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI, the attack was swiftly repelled. Troops launched a pursuit towards the Mangari area, forcing the terrorists to abandon all abducted civilians and vehicles. All rescued civilians, estimated at over 150, were safely recovered and moved to Buratai for onward movement to reunite with their families.
During the pursuit, troops encountered an improvised explosive device along the Bula Zarma–Mangari axis, resulting in five personnel sustaining severe injuries. The wounded personnel were promptly evacuated for specialist medical care, highlighting the risks faced by military forces in the region.
