Nigerian Troops Neutralize 30 ISWAP Terrorists and Destroy Speed Boats in Lake Chad Offensive

In a significant military operation, troops of the Northeast Joint Task Force, Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), have neutralized 30 Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists on Kaniram Island in Lake Chad, Borno state. The offensive, conducted between April 21 and 22, 2026, also resulted in the destruction of several terrorist speed boats, severely disrupting their logistics networks and mobility in the region.

Precision Strikes and Intelligence-Led Operations

According to Lt-Col. Sani Uba, the OPHK Media Information Officer, the operation leveraged credible Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) inputs. The Air Component executed devastating precision air strikes that dismantled ISWAP terrorist logistics hubs along the Lake Chad waterways and the Kaniram Island axis. Uba stated, "Acting on credible ISR inputs, OPHK air assets established persistent overhead presence and confirmed the concentration of over 30 terrorist boats and associated terrorist elements coordinating movement and resupply activities." He emphasized that targeted validation and positive identification were carefully achieved to ensure high targeting fidelity prior to engagement.

Disruption of Terrorist Activities and Follow-On Actions

Following deliberate confirmation in line with Rules of Engagement, OPHK executed well-coordinated precision strikes, leading to the destruction of several boats and the disruption of logistics hubs. This has degraded the terrorists' mobility and ability to sustain operations. Uba added, "The real-time ISR enabled rapid follow-on strikes on fleeing and regrouping elements within nearby vegetation, leading to the neutralization of more than 30 terrorists. Surviving elements were observed escaping in disarray, reflecting a breakdown in their cohesion and command structure."

Related Engagements and Battle Damage Assessment

In a related engagement at Sowolwolo in the Sambisa Forest axis, additional precision-guided strikes were conducted with partner support, resulting in the destruction of three terrorist gun trucks and the neutralization of more terrorists. Battle Damage Assessment (BDA), supported by post-strike intelligence, confirmed significant enemy losses, with evidence of mass burial activities by ISWAP elements in the Mallam Fatori axis, underscoring the scale of attrition inflicted. Ground forces are currently exploiting the effects of these strikes to dominate adjoining areas and prevent any reconstitution by fleeing elements.

Military Commendation and Sustained Offensive Pressure

These operations highlight OPHK's sustained offensive pressure and effective air-land integration in dismantling terrorist networks, degrading their capabilities, and denying them freedom of action across the Joint Operations Area. The Military High Command commended the troops for their impressive battle performance and urged soldiers to sustain aggressive operations to dominate the battle space, reinforcing efforts to combat terrorism in Northeast Nigeria.
