Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has paid a solemn tribute to members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, Police, and other security agencies who lost their lives while fighting to restore peace in the state.
A Solemn Tribute at Gusau Ceremony
The governor's homage was delivered on Thursday, during the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day ceremony. The event took place at the Trade Fair Complex in the state capital, Gusau. Representing Governor Lawal was the Secretary to the State Government, Malam Abubakar Mohammad Nakwada.
In his address, the governor assured the families of the deceased security personnel that the state government remains committed to initiatives designed to improve their welfare and overall wellbeing. He described the annual event as a poignant reminder of the courage and sacrifice demonstrated by the nation's servicemen and women.
Recognising Zamfara's Heavy Burden
Governor Lawal directly addressed the severe security challenges that have plagued Zamfara in recent years. He acknowledged the heavy burden borne by the state in the face of banditry, terrorism, and other violent crimes.
"In the face of banditry, terrorism, and other criminal activities, our Armed Forces and security personnel have stood firm, often at great personal risk," the governor's statement read. "Many of our brave sons and daughters have paid the ultimate price in the course of restoring peace and stability to our communities."
He extended a special message to the bereaved families, particularly widows, widowers, and children, sharing in their pain and loss. Lawal emphasised that their loved ones did not die in vain but in service to humanity and in defence of the collective future of the state.
Reaffirmed Commitment to Security and Welfare
Beyond the tributes, Governor Lawal outlined a two-pronged approach moving forward. Firstly, he reiterated the government's pledge to sustain support for programmes aimed at the welfare of the families left behind by fallen heroes.
Secondly, he called on all residents of Zamfara to actively support security operations. He urged the public to provide cooperation and credible intelligence to the security agencies operating in their communities.
The governor also highlighted the state government's plans to strengthen security operations. This will be achieved through:
- Improved logistics for security personnel.
- Enhanced welfare packages.
- The adoption of technology-driven intelligence strategies.
Governor Lawal concluded by saluting the courage of the fallen and reaffirming a collective resolve to build a safer and more prosperous Zamfara State.
