Eyewitnesses reported that the body had already begun to decompose by the time it was found by passersby. Social media posts, including photographs shared by Tochukwu Ogbuagu on Facebook on Thursday, showed the deceased lying in a wheelbarrow. Speculation online suggested the man may have died while resting after a day's work, but authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of death.
The remains were located in a busy area, drawing attention from local residents and commuters. The Abayi Police Division was alerted, prompting immediate action.
Official Response and Evacuation
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Abayi Police Division, Okereke Amos, issued a letter to the Environmental Health Department of the Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Council, requesting urgent evacuation of the corpse. In the letter, Amos stated that the corpse posed a significant public health hazard, emphasizing the need for swift removal.
In response, health officials from the Environmental Health Services Department accompanied police officers to the scene. The remains were evacuated and transported to the Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH) at Ahiaba Umueze for preservation and further examination.

Police spokesperson for Abia State, Maureen Chinaka, confirmed the incident to PREMIUM TIMES on Friday. She stated, "An investigation is now underway to determine the identity of the deceased and the circumstances surrounding his death."
