The Ebonyi State Police Command has announced a significant crackdown on criminal activities within the state for the year 2025, culminating in the arrest of over 1,700 suspects and the recovery of a cache of dangerous weapons.
Comprehensive Breakdown of 2025 Law Enforcement Achievements
In a detailed statement released on Thursday, 8 January 2026, and obtained in Abakaliki, the Command's spokesperson, SP Joshua Ukandu, provided a full account of their annual performance. The data, presented under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, CP Adaku Uche-Anya, reveals that a total of 1,733 suspects were apprehended in connection with 913 separate cases.
The demographic breakdown shows that 1,624 of the arrested individuals were male, while 109 were female. Furthermore, the Command successfully investigated and charged to court a substantial number of these cases. 462 cases, involving 844 suspects (822 males and 22 females), were thoroughly processed and presented for prosecution.
Major Crimes and Operational Recoveries
The police tackled a wide spectrum of serious offences throughout the year. Among the major incidents investigated were:
- 88 cases of murder
- 48 cases of armed robbery
- 30 cases of rape
- 156 cases of stealing
- 36 cases of unlawful possession of firearms
In terms of operational successes, the recoveries made by the Command were particularly noteworthy. The haul included:
- 35 locally fabricated guns (single and double-barrelled pistols and long guns)
- 7 pump-action rifles
- 6 AK-47 assault rifles
- 149 rounds of assorted ammunition
Beyond weapons, the Command also achieved critical successes in protecting citizens and property. Nine kidnapped victims were successfully rescued from captivity. Additionally, six stolen vehicles were recovered. One notable recovery was a Sino truck that was intercepted while being vandalised for sale as scrap metal.
Leadership, Community Engagement, and Future Plans
CP Uche-Anya's leadership approach involved direct engagement across the state. She conducted an assessment tour of all 13 Local Government Areas in Ebonyi, meeting with strategic stakeholders. During these engagements, she consistently emphasised dialogue, peace, and collaboration as indispensable tools for achieving sustainable growth and security in society.
