Lagos Secures Federal Funding for Construction of Modern Police Stations

The Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF) has successfully secured a federal donor to fully finance the construction of modern police stations across the state. This landmark intervention, facilitated under the leadership of LSSTF Executive Secretary and CEO, Dr Ayo Ogunsan, highlights a growing synergy between public institutions and donor-backed initiatives aimed at strengthening internal security in Nigeria's commercial nerve centre.

Construction Begins in Phases Across Key Locations

The construction work has already commenced and will be implemented in phases to eventually capture many other police stations. The initial phase includes six strategically selected sites:

  • Morogbo Police Division in Badagry
  • Elere Police Division in Agege
  • Hogan Bassey Anti-Kidnapping Unit in Yaba
  • Oko Awo Police Station in Jankara, Lagos Island
  • MAN Centre Police Station in Ikeja
  • A Police Division in Ilasamaja

This geographic spread reflects a deliberate balance designed to enhance operational efficiency and response times across key urban and semi-urban corridors in Lagos.

Addressing Critical Infrastructure Gaps

With Lagos having an estimated population exceeding 20 million people and experiencing a steady daily influx of thousands, many existing police facilities have struggled with significant challenges. Some of these facilities are decades old and face capacity constraints, outdated equipment, and inadequate working environments.

The new stations are specifically designed to address these gaps by providing purpose-built structures equipped for contemporary policing demands. For instance, the Hogan Bassey Anti-Kidnapping Unit in Yaba is anticipated to significantly enhance intelligence-led operations against kidnapping and organized crime, while the Morogbo Division in Badagry will strengthen border and coastal security operations along Lagos's western flank.

Broader Socio-Economic Implications

This infrastructure upgrade is expected to yield broader socio-economic benefits. Police officers will work in more conducive environments, residents will experience enhanced quality of life through improved security, and investor confidence is likely to increase as a result of strengthened law enforcement capabilities.

As construction progresses, expectations are high that these new facilities will set a benchmark for police infrastructure development across Nigeria. The phased development approach ensures that many other police stations in Lagos will eventually benefit from similar infrastructure upgrades.

Strategic Partnerships and Leadership

Since his appointment in October 2025 to head the LSSTF, Dr Ayo Ogunsan has intensified efforts to bring together government entities, private sector actors, and development partners to support law enforcement agencies. These strategic partnerships are ensuring that security agencies are better equipped to tackle evolving threats in the region.

The successful securing of a single federal donor to underwrite the full cost of six police stations has been described as a testament to the Fund's credibility, transparency, and strategic vision. This achievement demonstrates how coordinated efforts between public and private sectors can yield tangible improvements in security infrastructure.
