Lagos Police Prevent NURTW Clash After Ajiboye Killing

Fatai Tijani, the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, has disclosed that the force has taken steps to prevent a possible clash among members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in the state. This development follows the killing of the union's organising secretary, Toba Ajiboye.

Police Move to Avert Violence

Tijani made the announcement during a meeting with the leadership of the NURTW and the Road Transport Employers' Association of Nigeria (RTEAN). He called on union members to refrain from any reprisal attacks and allow the police to complete their investigation.

The police commissioner also vowed that those responsible for Ajiboye's murder would be apprehended. The meeting was aimed at de-escalating tensions and ensuring peace within the transport sector.

Background of the Crisis

The killing of Toba Ajiboye, the organising secretary of the NURTW in Lagos, has heightened fears of a resurgence of violence among rival factions within the union. The NURTW has a history of conflicts over control of motor parks and routes, often leading to bloodshed.

In response, the Lagos State Police Command has deployed additional personnel to key areas to maintain order. Tijani assured that the police are working diligently to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Appeal for Calm

During the meeting, Tijani urged all parties to exercise restraint and cooperate with law enforcement. He emphasised that violence would only worsen the situation and that the police are committed to a thorough investigation.

The police commissioner's intervention is seen as a crucial step to prevent the crisis from escalating into widespread unrest. The NURTW leadership has also been called upon to educate their members on the importance of peace.
