Uniformed Gunmen Launch Brazen Attack on Police Patrol
In a daring assault that has heightened security concerns, a convoy of gunmen dressed in military-style uniforms ambushed a joint police patrol team in Anambra State on Wednesday, November 26. The violent encounter occurred along the Abatete–Eziowelle Road in Idemili North Local Government Area, sparking a fierce shootout that forced residents to flee for safety.
Details of the Ambush and Shootout
According to eyewitness accounts, the attackers arrived in a coordinated convoy of three vehicles: a white Toyota Hummer bus, a black Lexus 350 SUV, and a white Toyota Highlander. The assailants, wearing uniforms resembling those of military and police personnel, immediately opened fire on officers from the Department of Operations in Awka and the Special Anti-Cultism Squad who were conducting routine surveillance.
The police officers returned fire, leading to an intense exchange of gunfire that lasted several minutes. During the confrontation, one police officer sustained injuries while the patrol vehicle belonging to the Special Anti-Cultism Squad was struck by bullets before being set ablaze. A DOPS patrol pickup truck was also damaged by gunfire.
Videos from the scene showed flames engulfing one of the vehicles as panicked residents scrambled to escape the crossfire. The attackers eventually retreated after facing determined resistance from the security operatives.
Police Response and Security Measures
The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the incident through a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga. He stated that the armed group confronted the patrol teams but were successfully repelled, with no civilian casualties recorded.
Ikenga emphasized that the Commissioner of Police has ordered tighter security measures across the state, directing all divisions and patrol units to remain on high alert to protect residents. The police have urged the public to remain calm but vigilant, encouraging citizens to report any suspicious movements to the nearest police station.
The police spokesperson reaffirmed the command's commitment to safeguarding lives and property, vowing to continue confronting armed groups that threaten public peace in Anambra State.
This recent attack follows similar violence recorded in July when security forces clashed with armed hoodlums in Oko and at the Ekwulobia flyover, an incident that resulted in two civilian deaths and the burning of a vigilante security vehicle.
