The Nigerian Correctional Officers' Wives' Association (NICOWA) has made a strong appeal for the strengthening of family systems to uplift the spirits and performance of correctional service personnel. The association emphasized that these officers are critical frontline actors in Nigeria's security framework.
Convention Highlights Need for Family Support
This vital call was made by the President of NICOWA, Mrs. Victoria Nwakuche, who is also the wife of the Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS). She spoke during the 2025 NICOWA National Convention held in Abuja.
Mrs. Nwakuche highlighted the immense emotional and mental toll on officers serving in one of the nation's most demanding security sectors. She stated that their families are the bedrock of their stability, providing crucial support while they work in crisis-sensitive environments.
Women as Pillars of Stability and Progress
The convention's theme, 'Women Navigating Modern-Day Pressures: The Role of Women in Tackling Societal Issues', set the stage for deep reflection. Mrs. Nwakuche urged members nationwide to assess their progress and chart a future path for the association.
She acknowledged that pressures on women have become more complex, spanning economic hurdles and growing social duties. Despite this, she affirmed that women remain central to maintaining stability and driving development. She specifically called on NICOWA to take action against societal ills like drug abuse and gender-based violence.
Leadership Acknowledges Women's Indispensable Role
In his remarks, the Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, recognized the unprecedented challenges faced by the wives of officers. He credited them with providing the emotional stability that keeps officers grounded and effective in their duties.
"When women unite with purpose, they become a force for transformation," the CG stated, underscoring that spousal support is fundamental to the strength and resilience of correctional officers.
The keynote speaker, Irena Ikyegh, reinforced this message, describing women as the glue that holds families and societies together. She praised their unique ability to adapt and persevere through adversity.
Ikyegh noted that women's emotional intelligence, empathy, and determination are instrumental in shaping society. She encouraged them to support one another and drive innovation, thereby strengthening their contributions to national security through their support for correctional officers.
