The Ondo State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has successfully thwarted a brazen attempt to smuggle illicit drugs into a prison facility in the state capital, Akure.
Interception at the Gate Lodge
During a routine security check on Wednesday, January 14, 2025, vigilant correctional officers at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Olokuta, Akure, intercepted two visitors. The officers discovered approximately four grams of a substance suspected to be Indian hemp hidden inside fresh tomatoes the visitors were bringing into the facility.
The illicit substance was reportedly wrapped in a watertight nylon package. According to an official statement from the NCoS, the drugs were allegedly intended for delivery to an inmate currently held at the centre.
Immediate Arrest and Handover
Acting in line with the strict directives of the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, the two suspects were immediately arrested. The NCoS has since handed them over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for a comprehensive investigation and potential prosecution.
The Controller of Corrections for Ondo State, Charles Oyewole, commended the officers involved for their alertness and professionalism. He described their prompt response as a clear reflection of the service's renewed dedication to maintaining stringent security protocols.
A Firm Warning to the Public
Controller Oyewole reaffirmed the unwavering resolve of the Nigerian Correctional Service to keep all custodial centres secure and humane. He emphasized the service's commitment to eradicating every form of illicit drug trafficking from the correctional system.
The command issued a stern warning to the public, especially visitors to custodial centres. The NCoS stated it will not tolerate any action, whether from inside or outside the prison walls, that could compromise the safety and security of its facilities.
This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by correctional services in preventing contraband from entering prisons and highlights the critical importance of continuous vigilance at all entry points.
