A devastating fire at the Lemon Green Restaurant in Delhi's Malviya Nagar area has claimed at least 21 lives. The blaze erupted at the multi-storey establishment in the Hauz Rani locality of South Delhi on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, around 8:50 AM.
Rescue Operations and Casualties
The Delhi Fire Service (DFS) received a report of the incident at approximately 9:45 AM and promptly dispatched firefighting and rescue teams. In an initial statement, the DFS confirmed that 37 people were rescued from the building's basement and transported to hospitals via CATS ambulances. According to Delhi Police, 21 individuals have been killed, while 37 were evacuated and admitted for medical treatment.
Among the deceased, a majority were foreign nationals, though the exact number remains unconfirmed. Joint Commissioner of Police (South) Vijay Kumar stated that authorities are in contact with the embassies of the deceased foreigners. "We are trying to establish their identity. Most documents at the scene are burnt," he said. Police teams are also locating the property owner.
Licensing Violations
The restaurant operated under a "Bed and Breakfast" license from the Delhi government, which permitted only six rooms. However, preliminary investigations suggest that the property was allegedly running around 25 rooms, including several in the basement. Additionally, the building had only one common entry and exit point. Authorities will examine whether violations of licensing and safety norms contributed to the tragedy.
Most occupants were individuals whose relatives were being treated at Max Hospital, located directly across the street. Max Hospital reported receiving 39 patients at its Emergency Department. Victims suffered from asphyxiation, burns, and fractures. Of the 39 patients, 18 were declared dead on arrival. Fifteen remain in the ICU, with eight on ventilator support in critical condition. Five patients with minor injuries were treated and discharged, while one severely burned patient was transferred to Safdarjung Hospital. The deceased include both Indian and foreign nationals.
Official Responses
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life, extending condolences to the victims' families and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured. She stated that the Delhi government is closely monitoring the situation and ensuring necessary medical assistance and support.
Delhi's Lieutenant Governor, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, conveyed his distress over the tragedy and condolences to the bereaved families. He confirmed that police, civil administration, and fire department teams are conducting rescue and relief operations. Officials have been directed to ensure immediate medical aid and a thorough investigation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sorrow and announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs. 2 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased, assuring that authorities are providing all possible assistance. Home Minister Amit Shah said he was deeply disturbed by the incident and assured that the best medical facilities will be provided to the injured.
