The Federal Capital Territory Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has initiated a major security operation for the Christmas season. Commandant Dr. Olusola Odumosu has ordered the deployment of 4,000 personnel across Abuja to safeguard residents and infrastructure.
Massive Deployment Across Specialized Units
According to a statement signed by the Acting Public Relations Officer, DSC Monica Ojobi, the deployment is comprehensive. Officers have been drawn from various elite departments to form a robust security blanket. The operation involves personnel from the Arms Squad, Crack Squad, and the Chemical Biological Radiological Nuclear Explosives unit.
Furthermore, the Female Strike Force, Counter Terrorism Unit, and Agro Rangers are all part of this extensive security arrangement. The goal is to provide security for lives, property, and Critical National Assets and Infrastructure before, during, and after the Yuletide celebrations.
Focus on Vulnerable Locations and Covert Ops
The NSCDC has identified and saturated key locations considered soft targets. There is a significant presence of officers at:
- Churches and places of worship
- Shopping malls and major markets
- Recreational and amusement parks
- Motor parks and transportation hubs
- Areas housing critical national assets
Dr. Odumosu revealed that undercover operatives have already been deployed for covert operations and surveillance to ensure proactiveness. The command is also focusing on known black spots, such as uncompleted buildings that could harbor criminals, to prevent any security breaches.
Commandant's Directives and Public Assurance
The Commandant issued strict orders to all Area Commanders and Divisional Officers, demanding utmost vigilance and a visible security presence in their respective councils. He warned that he would not tolerate any security lapses, stating, "All hands must be on deck... ensure your personnel comply adequately."
He also charged personnel to maintain professional conduct, work with other security agencies, and strictly adhere to rules of engagement. Harassment, intimidation of citizens, and accidental discharge are to be avoided.
While assuring FCT residents of a safe and secure environment for celebration, Odumosu urged the public to play their part. He called for vigilance and prompt reporting of any suspicious movements or persons to the nearest security agency. He also sent a stern warning to criminals and vandals to steer clear of critical assets, noting that covert officers and patrol teams are stationed across the city and will apprehend offenders.
The Commandant concluded by wishing all residents of the Federal Capital Territory a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
