Tragedy Strikes Ogoja: Five Lives Lost in River Accident
A devastating accident claimed five lives in Ogoja, Cross River State, when a mini bus carrying students plunged into a river. The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday, November 19, 2025, as the vehicle traveled from Igoli to Abakpa.
Escape and Rescue Efforts
The driver managed to escape the vehicle before it became completely submerged in water. Emergency services rushed to the scene, but unfortunately, all five passengers drowned before rescue operations could save them. Witnesses reported that the vehicle sank quickly, making rescue attempts extremely difficult.
Community Outcry Over Bridge Safety
Local residents expressed anger and frustration about the dangerous condition of the Abakpa River bridge. Idah Roland, a community member, told Vanguard: "It's unfortunate. Abakpa River bridge doesn't have a protector or iron railings. Practically, there is nothing to protect or prevent such accidents from taking place. Something needs to be done urgently."
The bridge and connecting roads remain extremely narrow despite ongoing renovation work initiated by the Cross River State Governor. The construction has led to constant traffic congestion as motorcycles and vehicles compete for limited space.
This is not the first accident of this nature in the area. Local reports indicate frequent crashes occur regularly, with multiple incidents of vehicles falling into the river while navigating the challenging road conditions. The combination of narrow passageways, ongoing construction, and absence of safety barriers creates a perfect storm for tragedies.
Authorities have been called upon to implement immediate safety measures to prevent future occurrences. Community leaders are demanding urgent installation of protective railings and improved traffic management around the bridge area.
