An 89-year-old gunman is on the run after a series of shootings in central Athens, Greece, on Tuesday. The suspect targeted a social security office and a courthouse, leaving several people wounded. A major police operation is underway to locate the elderly assailant.
Attack at Social Security Office
According to authorities, the man was armed with a shotgun concealed under a trenchcoat. He first entered the National Social Security Fund (EFKA) offices in the Kerameikos district. Alexandros Varveris, head of the fund, reported that the gunman reached the fourth floor, instructed an employee to "duck," and then shot another staff member in the leg. Police applied a tourniquet at the scene before the victim was taken to a hospital.
Courthouse Shooting
The suspect then moved to an Athens court building, where he opened fire on the ground floor. Footage from state broadcaster ERT News showed ambulance crews evacuating at least three additional people from the courthouse. Witnesses noted that the man threw envelopes containing documents onto the floor during the attack, claiming they explained his actions. A clear motive has not yet been established.
Greek police remain on high alert as they search for the suspect. Gun violence is notably rare in Greece, where firearm laws are strictly regulated.
