Collapse Details
A three-storey building identified as the Elite Five Star Lodge collapsed on Sunday night in Amaokpala, Oko, within Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State. The structure was primarily occupied by students of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko. A former official from the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident to reporters on Monday morning. The source stated that an undetermined number of students remain trapped beneath the rubble.
Rescue Efforts Underway
Rescue operations commenced immediately after the collapse. The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued Monday morning. Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga, a superintendent of police, announced that SEMA officials and police operatives were deployed following a distress call. “On receipt of the distress report, the Police, in collaboration with other security agencies, immediately mobilised to the scene, secured the area to prevent further danger, and coordinated rescue efforts,” Mr Ikenga stated. He added that the Anambra State Fire Service and SEMA responded promptly and joined the rescue operation.
Casualties and Medical Response
The police spokesperson confirmed that some injured victims have been recovered and transported to a local hospital in Oko for medical attention. The exact number of casualties remains unclear as rescue teams continue to search for others still trapped. Mr Ikenga urged residents to remain calm and avoid disseminating unverified information. He also asked the public to keep clear of the scene to facilitate unrestricted access for emergency responders.
Official Statements and Investigation
When contacted, the Executive Secretary of SEMA, Ndidi Omega, initially promised a response but had not provided further information by the time of publication. The cause of the collapse has not yet been determined. Authorities have not released the names of the trapped or injured individuals. The Anambra State Police Command assured that further updates will be communicated as more verified information becomes available. The incident has sparked concerns over building safety standards in areas housing students near polytechnics and universities.
