The Borno State Police Command has taken 78 vehicles without number plates and other required registration documents off the roads in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC) and Jere Council. This action is part of an intensified enforcement campaign targeting vehicles operating without proper registration number plates, as well as those with concealed, altered, defaced, or obscured plates.
Enforcement Details
The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso, stated that the operation aligns with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to sanitize vehicle registration and ownership across the country. Since the exercise began on June 10, 2026, the command has impounded a total of 78 vehicles found violating the law.
Legal Actions Taken
The owners and operators of the impounded vehicles have been duly processed, and appropriate cases have been charged before competent courts in accordance with existing laws.
Crime Prevention Strategy
Commissioner of Police for Borno State Command, Naziru Abdulmajid, explained that the enforcement exercise is a proactive crime prevention strategy. It aims to improve public safety, enhance intelligence gathering, and prevent criminal elements from using unregistered or improperly identified vehicles to commit crimes.
The Commissioner emphasized that the exercise is not intended to inconvenience law-abiding citizens but to ensure strict compliance with traffic and security regulations. He urged all vehicle owners to regularize their vehicle registration and ensure that approved number plates are properly displayed at all times.

The command assured the public that enforcement will continue to be conducted professionally, fairly, and with due respect for the rights of all citizens. Motorists are advised to comply with the law to avoid sanctions.
