Kano Hisbah Arrests Teenagers Over Planned Immoral Eid Party, Opts for Religious Guidance

The Kano State Hisbah Board has taken two teenagers into custody over allegations of planning what authorities have described as an immoral birthday gathering during the forthcoming Eid el Fitr celebrations in Kano. The suspects, identified as Umar Yahaya, 19, and Musa Al Hassan, 18, were arrested following intelligence reports that linked them to an online campaign inviting individuals from various parts of Nigeria to attend the event shortly after Eid prayers.

Details of the Alleged Plan

According to Mujahideen Aminudeen, the board's Deputy Command General, the teenagers openly claimed to be Yan Daudu, a term referring to pimps, and allegedly utilized social media platforms to coordinate the gathering. The proposed event was expected to include dancing and conduct deemed indecent under Islamic and cultural norms observed in Kano State.

"It is unfortunate and upsetting that some young people, whose ages are still very small, such as Umar Yahaya and Musa Al-Hassan, claim to be Yan Daudu and even invite others who identify the same way," Aminudeen stated. "They planned that after the prayers, people would gather and celebrate a birthday where there would be dancing and indecent behavior."

Aminudeen emphasized that the plan showed a disregard for the spiritual importance of Ramadan and Eid, potentially negating the moral discipline expected after a month of fasting and worship.

Decision for Guidance Over Prosecution

The deputy commandant disclosed that the suspects had shown remorse after their arrest, apologizing and admitting poor judgment. Further assessment by the board revealed a lack of basic religious knowledge and life direction among the teenagers.

"When we examined the situation, we realized that they did not even understand the religion properly. They lacked knowledge of Islam, proper conduct, and even a clear understanding of life," he explained.

Rather than pursuing prosecution, the Hisbah Board decided to place the teenagers under supervision for religious instruction and moral guidance. Aminudeen noted that imprisonment alone would not address the root of the problem, highlighting a rehabilitative approach focused on education and correction.

Increased Monitoring During Ramadan

In response to this incident and broader concerns, the Hisbah Board announced increased monitoring across Kano as Ramadan enters its final days. Personnel will be deployed around mosques during night prayers and periods of spiritual retreat to prevent misuse of religious gatherings.

"When the month of Ramadan reaches its final days, it is a time when the community should intensify their efforts," Aminudeen said, adding that complaints had been received about individuals exploiting Tahajjud outings for inappropriate meetings.

Authorities stated that these measures are aimed at preserving public morality and ensuring the sanctity of religious observances throughout Kano State.

Context of Previous Enforcement Actions

This arrest follows earlier reports of the Hisbah Board enforcing Ramadan regulations in Kano. Previously, nine Muslims were arrested for eating during the first day of this year's Ramadan fast, with detainees reportedly unaware that the fasting period had begun. Such actions underscore the board's ongoing efforts to uphold Islamic laws and cultural norms in the state.

The case of the teenagers highlights a nuanced approach by the Hisbah Board, balancing enforcement with guidance to address underlying issues of religious ignorance and moral deviation among youth.
