LASEMA Urges Caution on Electrical Use After Lagos Fire Outbreaks
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has issued a stern warning to residents regarding the proper handling of electrical equipment, following two separate fire incidents that erupted in parts of Lagos on Sunday. These blazes were attributed to electrical surges, highlighting the critical need for vigilance in household safety practices.
Details of the FESTAC Town Incident
In a statement released by Afolabi Olawale, Head of Public Affairs at LASEMA, the first fire occurred at FESTAC Town Phase 2. A single-storey building was engulfed in flames after a conduit wire sparked on the ground floor, leading to a rapid spread of fire. Fortunately, the swift action of the LASEMA Response Team and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service prevented the flames from reaching the top floor and adjacent structures. Olawale confirmed that no casualties were recorded in this incident, although household items valued at millions of naira were completely destroyed.
Ikeja GRA Fire Contained by Neighbors
A similar incident was reported at Rev. Ogunbiyi Estate in Ikeja GRA, where an electrical surge in an air conditioning unit ignited a fire on one of the upper floors of a duplex. In this case, neighbors played a pivotal role by responding quickly to contain the blaze before emergency responders arrived. Their prompt intervention, combined with the efforts of LASEMA and other agencies, ensured that the fire did not escalate, and no injuries or loss of life were reported.
LASEMA's Emergency Response Guidelines
Olawale emphasized the importance of early reporting in mitigating such emergencies. He urged the public to utilize the state's toll-free lines—112 or 767—to report any incidents immediately. Early notification can significantly enhance response times and minimize potential damage, he noted. Additionally, LASEMA has confirmed that operations at both locations have been concluded, with all affected areas deemed safe after thorough assessments.
This advisory serves as a crucial reminder for Lagos residents to exercise caution with electrical appliances and to remain prepared for emergencies. By adhering to these guidelines, the community can help prevent future incidents and ensure a safer environment for all.
