LAWMA Enhances Safety Protocols with Training for Highway Sweepers
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has taken a proactive step to bolster the safety and efficiency of its frontline sanitation workforce by conducting a comprehensive health and safety training exercise for highway sweepers. This initiative underscores the Authority's unwavering commitment to the wellbeing of its employees who operate in demanding environments.
Focus on Personal Protective Equipment and Hazardous Waste
During the training session, which was held along the Ikate-Elegushi corridor of the Lekki-Epe Expressway on Friday, the focus was squarely on the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). This includes essential items such as gloves, masks, and safety boots. Additionally, the training covered the safe handling and disposal of hazardous waste materials, ensuring that sweepers are equipped to manage risks effectively.
Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, emphasized that this exercise is part of a broader strategy to strengthen safety protocols. He stated that it is crucial for highway sweepers to be adequately trained and equipped to perform their duties in a safe and professional manner. "Our frontline workers face challenging conditions daily, and providing them with the right knowledge, tools, and protective gear is essential to minimise occupational hazards and boost productivity," Gbadegesin remarked.
Commitment to High Operational Standards
The training also reinforced LAWMA's dedication to maintaining high operational standards while prioritising the health and safety of its personnel. Gbadegesin highlighted that the Authority will continue to invest in regular capacity-building programmes and safety awareness initiatives. This ongoing effort aims to foster a culture of safety across all LAWMA operations, ensuring that Lagos roads remain clean without compromising worker welfare.
In his address, the LAWMA boss commended the dedication of the highway sweepers and encouraged them to consistently adhere to safety guidelines. He urged them to make proper use of protective equipment in the discharge of their duties, reinforcing the importance of vigilance and compliance in their daily tasks.
This training initiative reflects LAWMA's holistic approach to workforce development, combining practical skills with a strong emphasis on safety to enhance overall service delivery in Lagos.
