Panic gripped residents of Auchi, the administrative headquarters of Etsako West Local Government Area in Edo State, following multiple explosions on Wednesday evening, December 17.
Details of the Multiple Blasts
According to reports from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the explosions occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m. in three distinct locations across the town. The first incident was reported along Igbei Road. A second blast followed at the Igbo Shade area, situated near an AP filling station. The third explosion happened along the busy Auchi–Okene Road, close to Winners Junction.
Initial information suggests the catastrophic event was triggered by a fuel tanker accident. Properties worth millions of naira, including various buildings and shops, were destroyed across the three affected zones. At the time of reporting, it remained unconfirmed whether there were any casualties from the devastating blasts.
Official Account and Eyewitness Claims
A credible source from the Divisional Police Station in Auchi provided a sequence of events. The source indicated that a fuel tanker had fallen, spilling its contents. Residents reportedly scrambled to scoop the spilled petrol, which then flowed into drainage tunnels. This petrol later ignited, causing explosions at different points.
However, an eyewitness account, given on condition of anonymity, paints a potentially more sinister picture. The witness claimed the explosions occurred nearly simultaneously in different parts of Auchi. This timing led to suspicions that the blasts might have been coordinated. The eyewitness described the incident as an allegedly planned attack on the Auchi community and emphasized the urgent need for a thorough investigation to prevent any future occurrences.
Context and Official Reactions
This tragic event in Edo State follows another recent fuel-related disaster in the region. Legit.ng had earlier reported that no fewer than 40 people lost their lives after a fuel tanker exploded along the Essa axis on Agaie–Bida Road in Katcha LGA of Niger State.
In light of such incidents, safety authorities continue to urge the public to exercise caution. The fire service reiterated its call for Nigerians "to prioritise safety and vigilance at all times," stating that maintaining safety is a collective responsibility.
The situation in Auchi remains tense as residents and authorities assess the full extent of the damage and begin investigations into the precise cause of the multiple explosions.
