The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has firmly denied allegations that its online passport application portal redirects applicants' payments to any religious organisation, following a wave of complaints on social media platform X. Users, including one handle @BlackPepperMogo, claimed that funds meant for passport renewals were allegedly sent to Dunamis International Gospel Centre in Abuja, sparking concerns over the security and neutrality of the government system.
Official Response to Allegations
In a public notice dated May 2026, the NIS stated: "Recent allegations suggesting that the name of a religious organization appears in the Service's payment process are entirely false and do not reflect the structure, integrity, or processes of the NIS." The agency emphasised that it has never partnered with or authorised any private or religious entity to act as a payment intermediary. All legitimate passport transactions occur exclusively through the dedicated website passport.immigration.gov.ng, which serves both domestic and diaspora applicants.
Investigation and Public Warning
The NIS has launched an investigation to track down fraudulent websites that mimic the official portal. Security personnel are working to hold the perpetrators accountable under the law. Officials cautioned the public against using third-party links or unverified payment platforms, urging citizens to double-check browser web addresses before submitting financial details. The service also confirmed that it reached out to affected users via private messaging to assist with legitimate application steps.
Broader Context: Contactless Passport Renewal
Earlier, the NIS announced that Nigerians abroad can renew passports through the Contactless Passport Application System, allowing them to complete the process without visiting a diplomatic mission for biometric capture. This digital initiative aims to streamline services and reduce fraud, but the agency stresses that all payments must be made only through the official portal.
The NIS reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining transparent, secure, and accessible migration services for all Nigerians, while urging vigilance to prevent exploitation by scammers.
