Ogun Police Debunks Viral Video of Armed Bandits

The Ogun State Police Command has officially debunked a viral video circulating on social media that allegedly showed armed men operating within a forest in the state. The command described the content as false and misleading, emphasizing that it did not originate from Ogun State or any part of Nigeria.

Police Investigation Reveals Origin of Video

Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed this to journalists in a statement issued in Abeokuta on Monday. According to Babaseyi, investigations revealed that the footage, which depicts individuals cooking in a bush, was actually recorded in Kenya during an operation involving cattle rustlers. The video was captured by a General Service Unit (GSU) drone.

“Further verification indicates that the video was first uploaded online in 2022 and has since been deliberately recirculated with a false narrative to create panic and misinform the public about the security situation in Ogun State,” Babaseyi stated.

Commissioner of Police Condemns Deceptive Content

The Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, psc, condemned the video, labeling it as unverified and deceptive content. He stressed that such material is capable of causing unnecessary fear and undermining public confidence in security agencies. Ojajuni emphasized that there is no intelligence or operational report supporting the claim of any criminal presence within forests or any part of the state.

He reassured residents that the command remains proactive and committed to ensuring the safety and security of lives and property through intelligence-led policing, strategic deployments, and sustained operational vigilance across the state.

Public Urged to Rely on Official Channels

The CP urged members of the public to disregard the viral video and refrain from sharing unverified information that could incite panic or disrupt public peace. He charged citizens to rely only on official communication channels for credible and accurate security updates. Additionally, Ojajuni tasked residents to remain law-abiding and continue to support the police with timely and credible information, warning that the spread of false information and inciting content will not be tolerated.
