Lagos School Students and Teacher Escape Death in High-Speed Expressway Collision
In a harrowing incident on Wednesday evening, two students and their teacher from Lagos State Model Junior College, Igbonla, Epe, narrowly escaped death when the vehicle they were traveling in was involved in a serious collision on the Onipanu expressway. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the accident occurred around 6 p.m. on March 18, 2026.
Details of the Collision and Emergency Response
According to the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the accident was caused by two vehicles speeding along the expressway, resulting in a violent collision. The impact was so severe that one of the vehicles swung into the opposite lane, causing significant damage to both cars involved.
Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu provided a detailed account: "The Honda Accord had a single occupant, while the Suzuki Alto carried three occupants—a teacher and two students of Lagos State Model Junior College, Igbonla, Epe. LASEMA is pleased to report that no fatalities occurred and all occupants of the vehicles escaped without serious injury."
Injuries and Immediate Medical Attention
Despite the miraculous escape, two students—identified as Animashaun Ridwan (JSS 2) and Ogunbamowo Michael (JSS 2)—reported head and eye discomfort following the crash. LASEMA paramedics promptly attended to them at the scene, providing stabilization and first aid before safely handing them over to their parents.
The teacher involved has been named as Mr. Joseph, who teaches Basic Technology at Lagos State Model Junior Secondary School, Igbonla, Epe. He emerged from the accident unharmed, alongside the other occupants.
Scene Management and Investigation
Following the incident, LASEMA personnel removed the victims from the scene and recovered the badly damaged Suzuki Alto using the agency's Light Tow Truck. This action was taken to prevent any secondary incidents on the busy expressway. Both vehicles have been handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation into the causes of the collision.
LASEMA's Urgent Safety Appeal to Motorists
In the wake of this near-tragedy, Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu issued a stern warning to all road users across Lagos State. He emphasized the critical importance of exercising caution, observing speed limits, and strictly adhering to traffic regulations at all times.
"LASEMA urges all road users to exercise extreme caution, observe speed limits, and adhere strictly to traffic regulations at all times," he stated. "Reckless driving and speeding endanger lives and could lead to serious accidents. The Agency calls on motorists to prioritise safety to prevent similar incidents and protect lives on Lagos roads."
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by speeding and reckless driving on Lagos's often congested roadways. The swift response by LASEMA paramedics undoubtedly played a crucial role in ensuring the minor injuries did not escalate, highlighting the importance of emergency preparedness in urban centers.
