A diesel-laden tanker exploded at the Agu-Awka axis of Awka on the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, killing two persons and leaving two others with varying degrees of injuries.
Collision Triggers Explosion and Fire
The tanker, which was loaded with diesel, collided with a truck carrying bags of animal feeds at 11:26 p.m. on Thursday. The impact caused the tanker to explode and burst into flames, engulfing both vehicles in fire.
Emergency responders were swiftly deployed to the scene after a distress call was received. The Anambra State Fire Service mobilised firefighters and equipment to contain the blaze and rescue victims.
Fire Service Confirms Casualties and Response
Chukwudi Chiketa, the Chief Fire Officer of Anambra State Fire Service, confirmed the incident. He stated that the injured victims were rushed to a hospital for medical attention.
Mr Chiketa, who personally attended the scene, praised the firefighters for their prompt response. He urged motorists and other road users to exercise extreme caution, particularly when approaching sloping areas and when driving behind or around trucks conveying petroleum products.
Call for Vehicle Maintenance and Safety
The fire chief also advised motorists to ensure their vehicles are properly maintained. He emphasised the need for routine checks of critical components, especially braking systems, to prevent such accidents.
Mr Chiketa assured residents of Awka that the situation had been brought under control and advised them to remain calm. The incident highlights the recurring dangers posed by tanker accidents on Nigerian highways, which often result in fatalities and property loss.
