Kaduna Governor Uba Sani Orders Multi-Agency Probe into LNG Bus Explosion

Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, has directed a sweeping multi-agency investigation into an explosion involving an LNG-powered bus at Mando Motor Park in Kaduna. The governor assured residents that the incident does not pose a security threat to the state.

Government Statement on the Incident

In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Malam Ahmed Maiyaki, the Kaduna State Government provided preliminary findings on the early morning blast that occurred on April 5. According to the government, the explosion was linked to a technical fault associated with the overfilling of a compressed natural gas (CNG) tank.

The government clarified that the incident involved a bus operated by Silver Luxury Travel and described the explosion as minor. Maiyaki emphasized that there was no bomb explosion, no casualties, and no significant property loss. He noted that the situation was quickly contained, with normal activities restored at the motor park shortly after the incident.

Details of the Investigation Order

Governor Sani has mandated a comprehensive probe involving security agencies, technical regulators, and safety authorities to determine both the immediate and remote causes of the explosion. The move aims to strengthen safety protocols surrounding the use of gas-powered vehicles across Kaduna State.

The Commissioner commended the Kaduna State Police Command, particularly its Bomb Disposal Unit, for its prompt response in securing the area and preventing panic among residents. He urged the public to disregard unverified claims circulating online and to continue their lawful activities without fear.

Transport Company's Contradictory Account

In a separate statement, Silver Luxury Travel and Freight Management challenged the government's initial narrative, insisting that the cause of the explosion has not been established. The company disclosed that the blast affected two of its buses—one LNG-powered and one diesel—parked side by side at its Kaduna terminal.

The impact damaged a fuel tank and a gas canister, with the explosion occurring between the two vehicles, making it difficult to immediately determine the source. The company noted that each bus had multiple fuel tanks, but only those on the affected side were impacted.

While not ruling out sabotage, the company stated it has reported the incident to the police and pledged full cooperation with investigators. It urged the public to remain calm as authorities work to uncover the true cause. Additionally, the company clarified that, contrary to initial speculation, none of the buses is CNG-powered; only one is LNG-powered, and its tank was not overfilled as previously suggested.
