A devastating road accident has claimed the lives of six people in Yobe State, following a head-on collision between a trailer and a Canter truck. The tragic incident occurred on Thursday, January 15, along the busy Potiskum–Damaturu highway.
Wrong-Way Driving Leads to Catastrophe
Preliminary accounts from eyewitnesses at the scene indicate that the fatal crash was caused by the Canter truck driving against the lawful flow of traffic. The vehicle was reportedly on the wrong lane when it collided directly with the oncoming trailer, leading to immediate catastrophic damage.
An eyewitness who spoke to reporters described the grim scene, stating the Canter truck's violation of traffic rules was the clear precursor to the impact. The force of the collision was severe, trapping several victims within the wreckage.
Casualty Figures and Emergency Response
The aftermath of the crash revealed a heartbreaking toll. According to details gathered from the site, four of the deceased were occupants of the trailer, who were pronounced dead at the scene. The remaining two fatalities were from the Canter truck involved in the wrong-way driving.
In a stroke of fortune amidst the tragedy, two other individuals survived the accident. They were quickly transported to a nearby medical facility where they are currently receiving urgent treatment for their injuries.
Police Confirmation and Ongoing Investigation
The Yobe State Police Command has officially confirmed the incident and the casualty numbers. The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, provided the confirmation in a telephone interview on Thursday.
"The accident occurred along the Potiskum–Damaturu highway involving a trailer and a Canter truck. Six people lost their lives, while two others sustained injuries and are receiving treatment," SP Abdulkarim stated.
He further announced that a formal investigation into the precise cause of the crash has been launched. The police spokesperson also seized the moment to issue a stern appeal to all motorists. He urged drivers to strictly adhere to traffic regulations and prioritize safe driving practices to prevent such avoidable losses of life in the future.
The Potiskum–Damaturu highway is a critical artery connecting major parts of Yobe State. Unfortunately, it has been the site of numerous fatal accidents in recent years, with authorities often citing reckless driving and blatant disregard for traffic laws as primary causes.
